What your email inbox reveals about your personality
What your emaille inbox reveals about your personalityWhat your email inbox reveals about your personalityWhen I texted a friend to say I was thinking about writing an article on what your inbox might reveal about your personality, he immediately texted me backIve got three emails in my inbox. What does that say about me?It means youre the worst, I texted back.By youre the worst, of course, I meant, your ability to manage your digital life is everything I aspire to, and I am therefore insanely jealous.Managing your inbox is anunderrated workplace virtue, argues Richard Moran, CEO of consultancy Frost Sullivan. When employees dont respond, coworkers perceive them as unorganized and lazy.At that moment, my personal inbox contained 57 unread emails - but if Im being completely honest, Id recently spent a weekend whittling it down from close to 1,000.As Moran suggests, is my inability to keep a tidy inbox something I should worry about? In other words, if it signaled that I suffered fr om some deep-seated emotional issue or cognitive deficit beyond simple disorganization. Likewise, I wanted to know if inbox heroes like my friend were actually destined to be more successful than the rest of us.Of course, its impossible to look at anyones inbox and say for sure that he or she is a productivity ninja or a psychopath. Your email management strategy depends heavily on your profession, for example, and the standard flow of email in your office. But my conversations with experts on psychology and technology still yielded some important (and surprising) insights into the connection between email habits and personality traits. Heres what I found.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe filer/deleter sees a katechese in his inbox and takes action immediately. This person reads the email, sends a response if it calls for one, and then either deletes it (because its no longer u seful) or archives it in a specific folder. His email count typically hovers around zero.Larry Rosen, Ph.D., research psychologist and author of iDisorder Understanding Our Obsession With Technology and Overcoming its Hold on Us, admits he falls into this category. Being away from his inbox for too long, he tells Business Insider, makes him nervous - and he suspects it has something to do with his brain. The brain of a filer/deleter is uniquely wired to react negatively when faced with a bunch of unread messages. A huge, exploding inbox releases stress-based neurotransmitters, like cortisol, which make them anxious, Rosen says. Keeping a tidy inbox quells that anxiety, at least temporarily.Ultimately, Rosen suggests, your email-management strategy comes down to your desire for control. Whereas some people are fine leaving their house, their workspace, or their inbox a mess, filers/deleters would go crazy. They need an external way to have control over the world, Rosen says, and stic king to an inbox-management system fulfills their constant need for order. The saver has few unread emails, but rarely deletes a message after reading.According to Pamela Rutledge, Ph.D., director of the Media Psychology Research Center, there are a few potential explanations for this kind of saving behavior. One is perfectionism Perfectionists save read emails with the idea that they will get to them eventually, Rutledge tells Business Insider. These same people will have a to-do list that is so long it cant possibly be useful and a bunch of clothes that need to be mended sitting in the back of the closet.Essentially, saving emails is a way of deluding themselves into thinking theyll get around to addressing them all.Rutledge also posits that deleting emails feels too risky for savers. Some people save read emails for the sense of security it gives to believe they could find stuff if they needed to, she says. Some of us have more tolerance for uncertainty than others. The ignorer doe s not read or delete emails.I must confess I was heartened to learn more about the mindset of the email ignorer. According to Ron Friedman, Ph.D., author of The Best Place to Work The Art and Science of Creating an Extraordinary Workplace, keeping hundreds or thousands of unread emails in your inbox isnt necessarily a problematic behavior. Although Friedman cautions against drawing broad conclusions into peoples personality and psychological state from their email habits, he offers a few possible explanations for this tendency. On the one hand, he tells Business Insider, leaving emails unread can signify that youre overwhelmed or disengaged. On the other hand, it can also mean that you recognize that monitoring and organizing those emails isnt helping you achieve progress. And thats a sign of intelligence. Some email ignorers might actually bemoreorganized and productive than everyone else. After all, Friedman says, email reflects other peoples priorities for you, not necessarily impo rtant work that requires your immediate attention. This article originally appeared on Business Insider.

This is how much the average person will spend on Thanksgiving this year
This is how much the average person will spend on Thanksgiving this yearThis is how much the average person will spend on Thanksgiving this yearWake up early to watch the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade, stay on the couch to enjoy some early afternoon football, eat a few pounds of turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes, and finally fall asleep early and content. Now that sounds like the perfect Thanksgiving. On November 22, families and friends throughout the United States will come together to kick off the holiday season. Thanksgiving is not only a day to give thanks and to be happy, but it is apparently a day to spend a lot of money as well. For the second consecutive year, LendEDU conducted a survey of 1,000 Americans to uncover how much Thanksgiving will cost the average celebrator. You might be thinking to yourself, How much money can one possibly spend on Thanksgiving? But in reality, that special Thursday in November is not only one of the biggest travel days of the year, but also re quires a lot mora food than your run-of-the-mill dinner. And the Thanksgiving spending statistics we came away with might surprise youAverage American anticipates spending $175.65 on ThanksgivingThis particular survey was quite simple and was run in exactly the same manner as the previous year. Respondents were asked the following How much do you expect to spend on Thanksgiving this year? After averaging together answers from 1,000 Americans who intend to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, we found an average expenditure of $175.65 per person. The median value was $100.This years figure is a bit of an increase over brde years figure, in which we found the average Thanksgiving expenditure to be $165.14 per person. So where is all of this money being spent? One of the biggest costs associated with Thanksgiving is traveling. Whether it be by plane, bus, car, or Uber, millions of Americans will be hitting the road to celebrate the holiday with loved ones. AAA estimated that 50.9 million Amer icans journeyed at least 50 miles away from home last Thanksgiving, in addition to 4 million traveling in the sky and 1.5 million by train. Not to mention, average car rental rates spiked to $70 per day during Thanksgiving.Because of the Thanksgiving traveling phenomenon, we wanted to find out how much of our respondents Turkey Day budget was going toward travel. After averaging together all answers, we found that the average respondent will allocate 21 percent of their total Thanksgiving expenditure for traveling purposes. This percentage equates to $36.88 per person.Making the annual pilgrimage from Chicago to Texas each Thanksgiving, Stacey Caprio knows just how costly this holiday can get. As a consumer, I spend more on Thanksgiving travel and food. I always travel from Chicago to Texas to spend Thanksgiving with my immediate family and relatives, which includes a round-trip plane ticket, said Caprio.Food is the next biggest expenditure since we feed a large family of up to 14 p eople, she said. I never regret the spend on this holiday since it brings family together in such a wonderful way. While the average Thanksgiving expenditure may seem a bit high, it is important to remember that this is an average figure. Some people have more extravagant Thanksgiving parties with more than 20 guests and a smorgasbord that will require a more generous budget. These respondents would bring up the average Thanksgiving expenditure more so than those folks who enjoy just having a small group join them on Turkey Day.With all that said, it is important to budget for Thanksgiving expenses, especially if you are hosting, so that costs dont get away from you quickly. Giulia Umile, the Chief Operating Officer at Slice Communications, offered some tips on managing your money for the Thanksgiving feast Thanksgiving costs can get out of hand if you host, especially with the popularity of cooking shows and organic options. Depending on the size of your family and friends, budgets for hosting average $500. But that can go much higher quickly. It is important to first set a budget and then get creative on how to stick to it, said Umile. Asking people to bring sides is always a big help. When building your budget, put a cost to each dish you plan to make and each accessory or feature (like tablecloths, flowers, etc.) and then start eliminating them to hit your budget.MethodologyAll data found within this report came from a poll commissioned by LendEDU and conducted online by polling company Pollfish. In total, 1,000 Americans were polled on questions related to Thanksgiving. Respondents were screened to ensure they were planning on celebrating Thanksgiving in 2018. If respondents met the criteria, they were selected at random from Pollfishs online user panel of over 100 million.Respondents were asked to enter in an exact dollar amount when they were answering how much money they were expecting to spend on Thanksgiving-related expenses in 2018. After we collected 1,000 individual responses, we were able to calculate the average expenditure and the median expenditure. Respondents were also asked to enter in an exact proportion related to Thanksgiving travel expenses, these values were also averaged together. This poll was conducted over a two-day span from Sept. 29, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2018. All respondents were asked to answer each question truthfully and to the best of their abilities. This article was originally published on LendEDU.

Top 5 Social Skills for Workplace Success
Top 5 Social Skills for Workplace SuccessTop 5 Social Skills for Workplace SuccessWhat are social skills, and why are they essential for workplace success? Social skills, also called interpersonal skills, are those we use to interact and communicate with other people. These skills include both verbal skills (the way you speak to other people) and nonverbal skills (your body language, gestures, and eye contact). Why Employers Value Social Skills Social skills are importantsoft skills- the personal qualities (as opposed to professional hard skills acquired through education, training, or job experience) that are key to interacting well with others. Almost every job requires social skills. If you work on a team, you need to be able to get along with others. If you work with clients, you must listen attentively to their questions and concerns. If you are a manager, you will be called upon to motivate employees. Even if your job does not involve interacting with other people very muc h, you still need to possess a few social skills to interact with your employer and colleagues. Because social skills are so important, almost every employer looks for job candidates with behauptung competencies. It is therefore vital that you demonstrate that you have strong social skills in your resume, cover letter, and interview. Here is a list of the top five social skills that employers seek in candidates for employment. Also have a look at the subsequent tips on how to demonstrate that you have social skills throughout your job search. Top 5 Social Skills 1. Empathy Empathy is a very important skill. To interact well with others, you must be able to understand how they are feeling. Empathy is especially critical when dealing with clients who come to you with questions or problems. You need to express genuine concern for their issues, as well as helping to solve them. 2. Cooperation Cooperation is especially important when you work on ateam, where you will be required to p artner with others to reach a commongoal. However, even if you do not work on a team, cooperation is still necessary on those occasions when you are asked to work alongside colleagues to help achieve the goals of your organization. 3. Verbal and Written Communication Verbal communicationis the ability to express yourself using clear language that others can understand. Youll need solid verbal communication skills whenever you speak to others in person or on the phone. Written communication comes into play whenever you write an email, text, letter, report, or presentation here, appropriate grammar, spelling, and format are necessary. 4. Listening Another important communication skill that helps you interact well with others islistening. You need to be able to listen carefully to what your employer tells you to do, to what your colleagues say in a meeting, and to what your employees ask of you. You must listen to clients concerns, and express to them that you have understood them. Pe ople respond well to others when they feel they are being heard. 5. Nonverbal Communication While verbal communication is an important skill, so isnonverbal communication. Through your body language, eye contact, and facial expressions, you can express that you are an empathetic person who carefully listens to others. How to Show Your Social Skills During a Job Search Try to demonstrate that you have all of these social skills throughout your job search process. Firstly, be sure to incorporate the social skill words discussed here (empathy, cooperation, verbal and written communication, listening, nonverbal communication) into yourresume. Good places to use these keywords are in your work history or in yourresume summary(if you have one). Secondly, you can use these words in yourcover letter. In the body of your letter, mention one or two of these skills, providing specific examples of a time when you demonstrated them at work. Thirdly, you can use these skill words in anintervi ew. Make sure you have at least one example for a time you utilized each of the top five skills listed here. Of course, each job will require different skills and experiences, so make sure you read the job description carefully, and focus on the skills listed by the employer. Interviews also provide the perfect forum to demonstrate your interpersonal talents. Make sure to usenonverbal communicationthat conveys your interest in the interview, the employer, and the job. Speak clearly, and listen carefully to the questions being asked. Displaying these interpersonal skills in person is the best way to convince an employer that you have what it takes to excel in the position theyre offering.

Why the new Starbucks Reserve may not be best place for remote work
Why the new Starbucks Reserve may leid be best place for remote workWhy the new Starbucks Reserve may not be best place for remote workStarbucks coffee is everywhere. It was in my hometown growing up, and the area where I went to high school. It was a block away from my college campus, and a short drive from my first office after graduation. It was in the city where I studied abroad, and almost every airport Ive ever flown through.Starbucks omnipresence has made it somewhat of a paradox Its yur local coffee shop that you can bring with you anywhere in the world. And for people who travel with their laptops in tow, its also become something of a second office, lending itself to remote work over a steaming cup of Joe (or latt, or frappuccino).Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut sometimes, Starbucks can feel too something. Too corporate, too generic? Every Starbucks looks like ever y other Starbucks. Thats part of the charm, but it also means that your morning coffee routine lacks everything that could ever make it special.Introducing Starbucks ReservePerhaps thats why Starbucks has started a line of elite coffees and opened boutique roasteries. With locations in Seattle, Shanghai, Milan, and New York, and with two more storefronts in Tokyo and Chicago coming soon, Starbucks is expanding its luxury branding across the globe (Reserve bars and Starbucks shops that feature Reserve coffees are also around). So what does Starbucks Reserve provide? The rarest, most extraordinary coffees Starbucks has to offer, according to its website. In other words Something special. If you live in one of the cities where Starbucks Reserve has already made an appearance, you may have seen Instagram posts from friends who have decided to spend a day working at one of the trendy hubs. And on the surface, that makes sense - we go to regular Starbucks shops to check our email or write, so why wouldnt we do the same at an upgraded version? But then, like with any destination, theres always the concern that uniqueness and buzz will mean crowds and noise. Any place with hype is unlikely to be conduciveto work. In fact, thats part of what makes a regular Starbucks so perfect - its absolute ubiquitousness means theres no fanfare or enthusiasm, and if one location is too crowded, therell be another one a few streets away.As I heard more and more about the Starbucks Reserveroastery that arrived in Manhattans culture-heavy Chelsea neighborhood this winter, I decided to check it out for myself. Should this be the new hot spot for New Yorkers who need a day away from the office? Or is it too overwhelming? The vibeMuch like some of New Yorks major food icons (Eataly, Chelsea Market), Starbucks Reserves New York base can feel formidable to take on. Its three stories include pastry, coffee, takeaway bean and cocktail bars, all ornate and lush.Even from the outside, the Reserve roastery intimidates. With two heavy wooden doors, the design seems significantand weighty, almost like entering another land. On the inside, the New York roastery is all wood and copper. It feels like a sequel to Oz the Great and Powerful, but where coffee plays the Wizard instead of James Franco. If you think your daily Starbucks reservierung is expensive, Reserves offerings may make you gawk. From ahazelnut biancolatt to a sparkling citrus espresso, the menu is decadent, which means it wont be cheap. Be ready for one drink and a pastry to run you more than $10.After you order, the cashier may caution you to search out a seat before your food and beverage are ready. Mine did. I found a small wooden table and chair on the spaces lower level, in a corner, and waited for a text message telling me my food was prepared. When my phone buzzed, I walked up to the counter and tracked down a barista carrying my order on a slim, sleek, teeny-tiny tray.I returned to my seat (which was more of a log) and nibbled on my $10 muffin and hot chocolate. Then, it was time to start working. The struggleIf you live in New York, the last place you want to be is surrounded by tourists. Luckily, there are a lot of places out-of-towners dont go. But Starbucks Reserve is one of the places they do.At the bar beside my table, entire groups of people introduced themselves. Where are you from? they would ask. None of them said the city. I overheard one woman say she traveled all the way from her home state for this - for a coffee (or whatever fancy choice she plucked from the menu) at a Starbucks Reserve roastery. Im assuming she was kidding, though who knows? If there is anything thats counterproductive to working, its being surrounded by people who are having loud conversations, flocking to a destination for social hour (even at 11 a.m.). And thats the environment at the New York location.Your friends may have posted filtered photos sitting inside the roastery, focused on their laptops. S olely based on my experience, their grams are lying to you. The loud music, the chit chat, the constant flow of tourists taking selfies - none of it makes you want to work. I spent hours there, and I barely got through about 45 minutes worth of stuff. If you want a cup of premium coffee with a colleague and work in Chelsea, the roastery may be a good 30-minute stop. But its not a place to work long-term - it doesnt even appear to be designed for that. From my corner, I saw no outlets to charge a laptop. My wooden seat was hard and stiff there was nothing to sink into, and any comfortable seating was already taken when I arrived in the morning.Perhaps all of this was intentional - Reserve is not your classic Starbucks. Its an experience. And it doesnt have to go well with the drudgery of everyday life.Your local Starbucks may be betterThe Reserve roastery was so crowded that a man asked to share my table. He settled into another wooden chair and started plugging away - a kindred s pirit, I thought. Soon, he was complaining. It was too loud. He wouldnt be able to hear his business call in 15 minutes. The seats were uncomfortable, and there were no outlets. He, a perfect stranger, shared my thoughts completely. We were here to work, and this place wasnt right for us.But it was right for the constant flood of people coming in for a photo, or for those who crowded around the coffee bar to speak with friends or strangers. It was right for the groups of women who sat around chatting as one of them sipped a drink. It was right for the people who saw Reserve as an attraction, not a coffee shop. For those of us who dont care much for becoming Instagram influencers, but who do want to get work done, a Reserve space may not be our best environment. Which is okay, because just across the street from the New York roastery is an ordinary Starbucks - plain, boring and (presumably) filled with comfy seats and outlets. Luxurious doesnt always mean ideal, and in this case, the familiar and safe may actually play out better than the new and special. So sure, if theres a Starbucks Reserve outpost in your town, maybe hit it up for a drink. But dont expect the perfect serenity of being somewhere thats nothing special. That kind of feeling is reserved for the average Starbucks on your street corner. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
